TCTSY
Developed at the Trauma Center in Brookline, Massachusetts, Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an empirically validated, clinical intervention designed as an adjunctive treatment for people with experiences of inter-relational abuse and/or neglect. They may have a diagnosis of complex trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).This includes survivors of different forms of childhood abuse, domestic violence suvivors, war veterans and sexual assault survivors amongst others.
In TCTSY, participants engage in a series of physical forms and movements, based on the movements of hatha yoga, however elements of the practice are adapted to enable participants to explore the idea of 'having a body', including noticing how their body feels, making choices about what to do with their own body and basing those choices on what they feel. These modifications, amongst others, are made to allow trauma survivors to feel a sense of agency over their own body, that is often compromised as a result of trauma.
Everything in a TCTSY class is offered as an invitation to the participants and TCTSY does not use physical hands-on adjustments to influence a participant's physical form. Rather, TCTSY presents opportunities for participants to be in charge of themselves based on a felt sense of their own body within the safety of a relationship with the facilitator.
TCTSY Facilitators (TCTSY-F) are trained, supervised and held to account for the ethics and quality of their practice, through the Center for Trauma and Embodiment, Boston.
